As we approach Thanksgiving, the official start of the holiday season, I think we can all be thankful for at least one thing: The election is over. (And if you’re a City Paper reader, there’s a good chance you’re as thankful as we are for the way it turned out too, but nevermind—election’s over.) Now we can clear our minds of all that partisan bickering we bicker so much about and get to what the holiday season is really all about: Buying stuff and getting drunk.

In fact, there’s so much stuff to buy and drinking to do that we here at City Paper have decided to split our traditional Holiday Guide into two How to Survive the Holidays guides. The first one—which you’re holding in your hot little mitts—is our Gift Guide, which we could also call Buying Stuff, but Holiday Guide sounds much more in line with the holiday-season spirit, so we went with that. In it, we offer suggestions of stuff to buy for everyone on your list, including the Sometimes-Annoying Love Of Your Life, your Potentially Senile Mom and Dad, your Pretentious Hipster Brother, your Wannabe-Fashionista Sister, and several other members of your family—about 100 hand-picked gifts in all, with a wide range of prices and all available at locally-owned, non-chain stores throughout the area. We’ve also got special pieces on buying food stuff, buying music stuff, buying tickets to stuff, and, well, because it’s not really all about buying stuff, a guide to charities who really need stuff—and money.

We hope this gets you going in your participation in the holiday season. Stay tuned! In three short weeks, City Paper brings you part two of How to Survive the Holidays, which will focus more on the “getting drunk” part of the holiday season—but again, we’ve got parents too, so we’ll call that one “Get Out and Celebrate!

In the meantime, start buying stuff and have a happy holiday season!
