Fells Point’s original seafood restaurant still draws locals with great service, sweaty live blues, authentic atmosphere, and its famed mussels. Go for the music, and for Sunday brunch.

Black Olive

Black Olive is serious about fish. We love the stuffed baby calamari and the grilled octopus salad to start, then it’s right on to a whole prepared fish—whichever one our waiter looks most rapturous describing. A local standard, in more ways than one.

Pretty much the place for leveled-up breakfast food in Fells Point. Homemade stuff includes tall, tender biscuits, intensely fruity jam, very good sausage, and amazing hash browns. There’s always a wait on weekend mornings.

Bond Street Social

As the “social” in the name indicates, this brassy newish spot is a bit more of a bar with food than a sit-down fine-dining establishment, but the easy-to-share bar-food-as-tapas apps are sharp and the “fork and knife” entrées don’t disappoint. Cocktails get every bit as much attention.

Darbar offers all the usual suspects you expect from an Indian restaurant—the chicken tikka masala, the lamb vindaloo—plus some not-so-common standouts (chicken xacutti from Goa; benghan aftab, a fried eggplant dish).

The Greene Turtle

This small spot hasn’t slipped a notch over the years. Always recommended on the seasonally changing menu are the fried oysters with Pernod sauce and spinach, barbecued shrimp wrapped with bacon, and crab cakes.

Elegant dining with an ambitious menu has been the hallmark of this Thames Street spot since Harbor East was mostly bus parking, and the kitchen continues to turn out fine seafood with a Mediterranean accent and more.

Kali’s Mezze

Kali’s Mezze still packs the house for authentic Mediterranean small plates. Looking for fattoush, horta, or pastirma? You’ll find it here along with savory cheese pies, moussaka, and a tarama that will make you wish you could lick your plate.

Kooper’s Tavern

Kooper’s Tavern is the prototypical modern Fells Point bar, its menu a mix of classic bar food and slightly upscale cuisine. The burgers are semi-legendary, and with good reason.

Liquid Earth

Vegan-friendly Liquid Earth offers a filly cheese phake, raw food like “tacos” made with collard green leaves filled with nuts and veggies, and smoothies made from whole-food ingredients, locally and organically sourced.

The dining room is all Old World opulence and the Creole/French cuisine is equally decadent, from pecan-encrusted fish to an elegant take on seafood gumbo.

Max’s has been nigh-on legendary for decades for its exhaustive beer selection (some 140 drafts, more than 1,000 bottled brews). The kitchen menu is tagged “Other Than Beer,” and while the apps, burgers, sandwiches, and so on are no afterthought, seriously: beer.

This two-level “patisserie and bistro” from the Kali’s Court people rocks yummy food at moderate prices. A few lovely entrées like fresh pasta primavera and braised short ribs in an apply demi-glace are priced below $20. The wine list and service are spot-on.

A friendly, casual, and intimate waterfront space for raw-fish enjoyment. The sushi chefs fillet up sterling examples of tuna, yellowtail, and, especially, fatty salmon.

The Olive Room at the Inn at the Black Olive

The rooftop Olive Room offers a rare view of the city—looking westward into the harbor—and the bar and kitchen both feature organic ingredients, the latter applying them to simple, exquisite preparations of Eastern Mediterranean specialties (all manner of lovely lamb dishes, the stunning eggplant dish imam bayildi).

Peter’s Inn

Tiny Peter’s Inn is never the same place twice, though you can reliably count on a thoughtful and shifting selection of entrées on the chalkboard menu, the filet, great wines by the glass, and the opening salad and garlic bread. It’s often jammed, and with good reason.

Pierpoint Restaurant

Pierpoint continues to deliver high-quality regional dishes with a focus on Maryland classics. Don’t miss the awesome Balto box, an appetizer that includes its famous smoked crab cakes plus refined iterations of coddies, fried oysters, and clams casino.

The Point in Fells

Creative food in a formal dining room with slightly more informal service. Don’t miss the woodsy mushroom salad served with udon noodles or the seared monkfish that floats in a lovely pool of carbonara-inspired sauce.

This neighborhood joint has gotten a makeover, and there’s enough innovation now to elevate the fare beyond pub grub. Pizzas are excellent, the salads satisfy, and the Maryland fried-chicken sandwich is the best in town.

Someone knew the way to a Baltimore booze nerd’s heart, naming this new spot after Baltimore’s erstwhile distilled beverage of choice. Rye follows up with an emphasis on custom cocktails, charcuterie, and the out-on-the-town version of backwards night: breakfast for dinner. A cozy vibe too.

Salt

When Salt opened in 2006, people just couldn’t stop raving about the foie-gras-topped sliders and fries cooked in duck fat. Now that fancy comfort food has flooded the city, Salt has settled in to being a charming neighborhood joint with the kind of food that keeps neighbors very, very happy.

Shuckers

What goes better with a harbor view than all manner of raw, steamed, and prepared-otherwise seafood, which highlights what this gregarious spot dishes out.

It’s hard not to order breakfast at what may be Baltimore’s best 24-hour diner, but the Sip and Bite’s American and Greek classics rock too.

Slainte Irish Pub and Restaurant

This sprawling Fells Point spot has enough self-identity to avoid the Irish-pub-in-a-box trap. Watch real football and rugby matches on TV, relax with real, honest-to-god Irish people (and your American pals), drink expert pours of Guinness, and eat excellent sandwiches and burgers and respectable shepherd’s pie.

Sticky Rice

The first Maryland outpost of this pan-Asian bar/eatery offers a little something for the whole family, from its signature pail of tater tots to noodles to sushi. Chicken-stuffed pot stickers are hits, and many dishes can be made vegan/vegetarian.

At last, a no-brainer recommendation for quality, reasonably priced seafood restaurant downtown. It’s casual but with attention paid to impeccably fresh, slightly luxe preparations and a solid beer and wine list.

V-No Wine Bar

A clean, unfussy place to hang that offers a thoughtful, tasty assortment of bottled grape, as well as some nice varieties available by the glass at reasonable prices and a smattering of pleasant nibbles.

The unprepossessing pubby interior and belies the quality and sparkle of the food the kitchen turns out—a good butcher’s plate, pork belly tacos, a spicy crab soup—and the excellent service. Not just another Fells Point bar with food.

Long-running Fells Point café has evolved into a full-fledged dining establishment, with a smart wine list and chef’s specials augmenting the original menu of Eastern European fare. Day-long dining, and an early-risers’ weekend brunch.

Zorba’s

A big part of the Zorba’s experience is watching spits laden with chicken, lamb, and pork revolve over hot coals. The taramosalata and moussaka lack spicy bite, but the kontosouvli is delicious and plentiful.
