Recently, City Paper launched a new project called Summer of the Gun, in which contributing writer and photographer J.M. Giordano documents shootings in the city and their aftermath with photos, text, and audio. Four installments are already posted at citypaper.com/summerofthegun.

In this picture, from the third installment, Mary Davis, aunt of 26-year-old Davon Akeme, grieves after her nephew was fatally shot in the chest in the 4200 block of Pimlico Road.

“He was a good young man,” she said. “Never a problem. He was raised by his grandmother. The city is going to hell, It’s people killing people. It was never this bad. Even with the drugs, you never had any killings like this.”
