Hey Baltimore! Are you enjoying your Arctic Blast? For a while there it looked like we might skate by this year with no winter—or at least a minimal one, with just enough of a dusting to take one muddy sled ride down the nearest hill and whip out our all-weather boots that one time. But this week, temperatures have plummeted along with Tom Brady’s self-esteem and we’re expected to drop into the teens, with “potential for significant snow accumulation” on Friday, according to weather.com

Don’t Panic! Do not run screaming to the supermarket to stock up on bottled water and guns. Do not drive 20 MPH on the beltway like a ninny. Do not place household furniture in the street to reserve your parking space.

As usual, City Paper has you covered with an elegant two-step plan to endure the coming cold: 1. Stay Warm; 2. Drink Whiskey.

This week, we provide you with all the tools you’ll need to follow the plan, including a primer on the various kinds of whiskey out there for your consumption, including Irish, Tennessee, Rye, Bourbon, Canadian, and single-malt and blended Scotch. If it’s hard to keep track, again, Don’t Panic. Your City Paper is portable and can be carried with you to the liquor store or bar for consultation.

“But I don’t know where to go to drink whiskey!”

Calm down, dear reader, we’ve got a guide to great places to sample delicious warmth-giving whiskey, as well as some interviews with local bartenders to help grease the customer-server wheels of communication.

Now that you’re warm and whiskeyed, take a moment to read our interview with Chris Cook, CEO of Sloop Betty, about the local company’s plans to distill whiskey right here in the great state of Maryland, which should help us keep warm for years to come. Now, doesn’t that feel better?
