The 2010 population count for Baltimore City was released by the U.S. Census on Feb. 8, and, though adjustments may yet be made, the number of city residents currently is pegged at 620,961. With 223 murders in 2010, this means the murder rate was 35.9 per 100,000 residents. The city hasn’t had a murder rate that low since 1989, when the population was 763,138, the number of murders was 262, and the murder rate was 34.3 per 100,000. Thus, Mobtown’s homicidal tendencies have declined to levels not seen since crack was king.
