William Kern, a police officer who shot a fellow cop in a training accident, was sentenced to two months in prison, while State’s Attorney Gregg Bernstein declined to prosecute the police who subdued Tyrone West, a drug suspect who died in police custody last summer. City Police said their deployment strategy was working as two robberies and two murders were witnessed or nearly witnessed by cops on patrol.
Wednesday, Dec. 18
6:58 p.m. A man who police have not yet publicly identified was stabbed multiple times near the intersection of 25th Street and Greenmount Avenue. Northern District officers working on the 2800 block of Greenmount were flagged down by a witness and told about the stabbing. The man was taken by paramedics to a hospital and pronounced dead at 9:10 p.m.
Thursday, Dec. 19
1:30 p.m. Devlon Cates Jr., a 30 year-old African-American man, was sitting in the driver’s seat of a vehicle on the 1500 block of East 29th Street when someone shot him through the driver’s side window. Police found him there. He was dead.
Friday, Dec. 20
2:40 p.m. An Eastern District police officer was on patrol near the 1200 block of North Luzerne Avenue when he saw a man get shot multiple times. The officer got out of his patrol car and the suspect, an African-American man in his early 20s, shot at him and ran. The man who was shot, who police have only identified as a 36-year-old man, died soon after at an area hospital.
Saturday, Dec. 21
2:07 p.m. A livery driver picking up a fare on the 2400 block of Maisel Court in the Westport neighborhood was shot in the back of his head. Southern District police responded with medics and got him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:30. Police have not yet identified the man. A second mas was also shot in the incident but is expected to survive.
Sunday, Dec. 22
3:05 a.m. Two men were shot, one fatally, on the 300 block of Park Avenue. Central District police arrived and medics took both victims, who police have not identified, to hospitals. One man was shot in the head and pronounced dead at 3:31 a.m. The other man was hit in the groin area and is expected to survive.
