Fall’s big slowdown in murders has garnered much less ink than the summer’s spike. Part of that is superstition: In Baltimore, it is considered bad luck to comment on the fact that no murders occurred over a spate of X days. (In this case, 10. Andre Miller was killed on the afternoon of Sept. 30, and the next person murdered in Baltimore was Reginald Hart, just after midnight on Oct. 11.) Would that a week or two with no killings becomes normal.

Friday, Oct. 11

12:18 a.m. Reginald Hart, a 58-year-old African-American man, was shot in the chest while on the 5500 block of Gwynn Oak Avenue in the Howard Park neighborhood. Northwest detectives got him to the hospital, but he died. The police had no suspects or motive for the shooting and asked witnesses to come forward.

Monday, Oct. 14

7:21 a.m. A 24-year-old African-American man was outside on the 3600 block of Bowers Avenue in the Grove Park neighborhood when someone shot him. The location is about a half-mile from the place where Hart was shot three days earlier.
