There were really only two murders this week, but two more were tallied because of earlier deaths that were ruled homicides. One happened on July 30, and the victim was 86 years old. The other is a two-decade-old shooting that became a murder last week as a man succumbed to injuries. The case is yet unsolved. Police named the officers involved in an Aug. 13 shooting. And the weekend saw two triple shootings, thankfully non-fatal, one of which injured a 7-year-old boy.

June 19, 2013

Michael Smoot, a 48-year-old African-American man died in hospice care 20 years after he was shot by unknown assailants. As The Baltimore Sun reports, Smoot was shot on three separate occasions over a 14-month period in 1992-3, culminating in a July 26, 1993 incident on the 2000 block of Barclay Street. The third shooting put Smoot in hospice, and the medical examiner’s office determined that that shot ultimately killed him, putting Smoot on the homicide roster in 2013. There are no suspects, The Sun reported.

Tuesday, July 30

10:02 a.m. Police officers responded to the Weinberg senior living apartments at 2500 W. Belvedere Ave. to find Ernest Curtis, an 86-year-old African-American man, dead. On Aug. 13, the medical examiner’s office determined the cause of death was asphyxiation, and that Curtis’ death was a homicide. Police are seeking witnesses in the case.

Tuesday, Aug. 13

1:44 a.m. Police responding to the 500 block of Tunbridge Road in the Mid-Govans neighborhood found an African-American man, later identified as Shawn Pooler, 22, of the 500 block of Harwood Avenue. Police gave no details of the circumstances of Pooler’s death.

Saturday, Aug. 17

12:16 a.m. Two men were arguing on the 400 block of North Montford Avenue in the McElderry Park neighborhood when one stabbed the other in the chest, killing him. Miles Ringgold, a 38-year-old African-American man, died at the hospital at 12:47 a.m. Police charged Todd Pollard, a 28-year-old African-American man who lives on the block, with the murder the next day.

Updates:

On Aug. 13, a police officer shot a man on the 3400 block of Old Frederick Road. The Sun reported that the police officer, who the department later identified as Charles Mewshaw, was driving in the southwest part of the city when he and a partner saw a suspected drug deal. The officers, dressed in plainclothes and ballistic vests that said POLICE, chased one of the suspects, and Mewshaw reportedly shot him several times. The wounded suspect was not identified by police. Mewshaw was placed on administrative leave for the second time this year after shooting a suspect. Police say that the three-year veteran also shot a man in the 3300 block of Edmonson Avenue on Jan. 28.
