This week’s Murder Ink covers May 24 through June 2 because of the Memorial Day holiday, which featured seven non-fatal shootings, including a police-involved one in which neither the police officer nor the suspect was identified. Police made several arrests on recent cases and arrested two of three suspects in a horrific execution-style murder of a 16-month-old baby in Cherry Hill.

May 24

7:05 p.m. Rashaw Scott, a 22-year-old African-American man, received a call from a friend that police now believe was a setup for his murder. Scott got into his pickup truck with Carter Scott, his 16-month-old son, and picked up Cornell Harvey to “hang out.” Harvey asked Scott to drive to the Cherrydale Apartments in Cherry Hill, where Harvey got out of the truck and started pacing around nervously. Then, according to police, three men wearing latex gloves started shooting into the truck. Police saw some of the shots fired; the three men ran. Rashaw Scott was critically wounded but was able to tell his story to detectives. Carter Scott was hit in the leg and died an hour after he was shot. Police charged Harvey, a 26-year-old African-American man, and Eddie Tarver, a 20-year-old African-American man, both of Cherry Hill, with first-degree murder and related crimes. Police are still seeking a third suspect. Online court records indicate that Tarver had two probation violations pending on a 2011 handgun conviction at the time of the murder. Harvey was found not guilty of first-degree murder in 2011. Police Commissioner Anthony Batts pledged to crack down on repeat offenders.

11:55 p.m. Wayne Vendemia, a 52-year-old Caucasian man, died of injuries sustained on May 21 on the 900 block of DeSoto Road, where he resided. Police had found him there, unresponsive, with head injuries a little after 8 p.m. On May 23, the Warrant Apprehension Task Force arrested and charged Kimberly Johnson, a 48-year-old Caucasian woman, with the beating. She is now charged with homicide.

May 25

7:30 p.m. Police were called to the 4500 block of Marble Hall Road and found Blake Harris, a 24-year-old African-American man, lying on the street, shot. He was taken to a hospital but died a half-hour later. Harris lived on the 5900 block of Dale Road in Sykesville, about 23 miles from where he was killed. Police are seeking witnesses.

May 28

2:31 p.m. Northern District police called for a suspicious death found Ray Bostick, a 50-year-old African-American man, dead in his residence on the 300 block of Birkwood Place. He had been beaten to death. No witnesses, no motive.

May 30

10:03 p.m. Southern District police called to the 3600 block of St. Margaret Street found Tyries Moody, a 26-year-old African-American man, on the street with multiple gunshot wounds in his back and torso. He was taken to a hospital, where he died a 12:46 a.m.

Less than an hour after that call, at 10:52 p.m., Southeastern police arrived at a house on the 1500 block of Charlotte Avenue to find Patrick Goodwin, a 50-year-old Caucasian man, lying in his dining room with a stab wound in his belly. Police learned that he had argued with another man and it “escalated.”

May 31

Melvin Taylor III, a 23-year-old African-American man, died from gunshot wounds he received five days earlier. On May 26 police found him outside on the 2800 block of Dukeland Avenue, shot in the head, left arm, and thigh. Taylor had resided on the 1800 block of McCulloh Street.

Also on May 31, Curtis Epps, a 48-year-old African-American man, died from injuries he received during an aggravated assault just after 2 a.m. on April 13, on the 5500 block of York Road. Epps resided on the 400 block of North Milton Avenue. Police had already charged Civine Crowder, a 32-year-old African-American man, with attempted murder. The charge will be upgraded.

Updates:

Aside from those mentioned above, police charged Lamont Holt, a 23-year-old African-American man, for the April 25 shooting murder of Kelvin Moyd, a 49-year-old African-American man, on the 3100 block of Palham Avenue.

On Saturday afternoon, May 25, a city police officer in pursuit of a shooting suspect in Pigtown shot the suspect, who they suspected of a shooting on the 1100 block of West Cross Street. Police said the officer, who was not identified, had helped to apprehend one of the suspects in the Cherry Hill murder the day before.
