One person was murdered this week, while another person shot earlier died. Police also closed four cases—two of them “by exception,” which means the suspect died.
Monday, May 13
2 p.m. Marcus Lemon, a 24-year-old African-American man from the 800 block of Jaydee Avenue in Dundalk, was on the 500 block of North Decker Avenue when someone walked up and shot him. Southeast District officers found him lying on the sidewalk with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body, and he was pronounced dead a half-hour later at an area hospital. The next day, police executed a search warrant at 3015 McElderry St. They arrested Derrick Dargan, a 23-year-old African-American man, on drug charges that day and on May 15 added first-degree murder charges for Lemon’s killing.
Friday, May 10
9:44 p.m. Southern District police responding to a call for a shooting found Yolanda Johnson, a 24-year-old African-American woman, with bullet wounds to her head and buttocks. She was taken to Shock Trauma and treated, but she died on May 17 at 3:33 p.m. Homicide detectives would like to hear from anyone with information about Ms. Johnson or her killer.
On May 7 police charged Eric Wise, a 23-year-old African-American man, with the December 2012 murder of Edward Thomas, a 32-year-old African-American man on the 1700 block of Gwynns Falls Parkway. Police had heard gunshots and found Thomas inside a dwelling, shot multiple times. Witnesses said he had been chased onto the porch by an unknown suspect, who fired and fled.
Police say they solved a near-decade-old murder this month. Jermain Murdock, a 20-year-old African-American man, was found face-down on the sidewalk on the 3400 block of Woodland Avenue on Oct. 6, 2004. An autopsy revealed that he had been stabbed and shot. According to police, his killer was Courtney Exum, an African-American man who was 26 years old at the time of the killing. Exum was found dead five weeks after Murdock, on Nov. 15, 2004, in a house on the 3900 block of Ridgewood Avenue. He, too, was shot multiple times. No word on how police solved it or whether Exum’s murder was solved.
In another cold case, police say Murray Ray, an African-American man who was 26 at the time, killed Sonti Randall Hayes on April 12, 2005. Hayes, a 30-year-old African-American man, was found just after midnight on the 500 block of McMechen Street, shot in the right side of the head and the lower right leg. The case was unsolved, but police now say Ray did it. Ray was gunned down on March 19 of this year on the 300 block of Wilson Street. His murder remains unsolved.
