Just before 7 p.m., a group of people were hanging out on the 2900 block of East Monument Street when several men opened fire as they approached from Curly Street, then ran away. Three people were shot; one died the next morning at 4:15 a.m. from several gunshot wounds. The other two victims—one shot in the hand, the other in the leg—are expected to survive. Police had not released the victims’ names and said they did not know of a motive for the shooting.
Walking from his second job at the Cheesecake Factory after work at 2:18 a.m. on April 7, Anthony Black, a 20-year-old African-American man, found two drunken Caucasian men “hitting on” his fiancée, who had come to pick him up. Black reportedly told them “that’s my girl,” setting off a verbal altercation that turned violent. He was stabbed. Police arrested Mathew Darby, 24, of Frederick, Md., that night but said the other man with him tried to defuse the situation so was not arrested, according to a Sun story. They changed their minds. On Monday, April 29, police arrested Derek Schuler, 24, of Glen Burnie on an outstanding warrant and charged him with murder.
Stanley Johnson, a 56-year-old African-American man stabbed on Feb. 7 at his home in Poppleton, died on March 9. His daughter’s boyfriend, Michael Donovan, a 36-year-old African-American man, was charged at the time with aggravated assault for stabbing him in the head and arm during an altercation with Johnson and his daughter. Johnson was taken to University Hospital, where he died more than a month later. Donovan’s charge was changed to murder.
