On Thursday, April 18, Southeast District officers responding to a domestic dispute in Canton shot a man to death after he apparently shot two women in the house. The first officer arrived at the home on the 3400 block of Foster Avenue at about quarter-to-midnight and interviewed the subjects, then returned to his car to write a report and call for backup, as is routine in domestic incidents. On the way to the scene, the two backup officers heard shots fired. All the police rushed into the house, where the suspect confronted police and a “mini exchange of gunfire” ensued, a police spokesperson said. The suspect, John Monroe, a 42-year-old African-American man, was shot and died at an area hospital. Inside the house were two women, one who had been shot in the arm and another shot in the ear. Both are expected to survive. Police were investigating the incident and had not yet released the names of the officers as of press time. Monroe was the second person killed by city police gunfire this year.
