It was a week of many nonfatal shootings, including a rash of seven in less than eight hours on April 10 and 11, and three more over the weekend, including a 16-year-old boy shot on Sunday afternoon on the 1600 block of North Ellamont Street. Also not in the murder statistics yet is the death of Matthew Hersl, 45, a City Hall employee who was hit by a speeding car at around 2 p.m. on April 9. Police say the driver of the car, identified as 43-year-old Johnny Johnson of Baltimore, had drugs in his system and was being pursued by a state trooper when he lost control of his Acura at the corner of Saratoga and Holliday streets, hit a light pole, a tree, and Hersl, and flipped the car. He’s been charged with manslaughter and related charges.

Monday, April 8

At 8:11 p.m. officers from the Northwest district responded to the 4100 block of Groveland Ave. for a report of a man not breathing. Officers found Herman Cook, a 69-year-old African-American man, lying on the floor unresponsive. He had been stabbed.

Tuesday, April 9

At 1:48 a.m. Southern district officers responded to 1600 block of Cypress St, for a report that several men were fighting. When they arrived a witness said a woman had yelled that “the police are on the way,” after which two of the men picked a victim off of the ground, put him in a truck and drove off. Police found Cyril Montel Holland, 28, an African-American man from Landover, at Harbor Hospital suffering from a head injury. He was transferred to Shock Trauma where he died at 8:46 p.m.

Wednesday, April 10

Western District police were dispatched to the 800 block of Lexington Street for a shooting in Midtown Edmonson at 12:48 a.m. In the rear of 800 Vine St., they found Ernest Chambers, a 39-year-old African-American man who had been hit multiple times in the body and head. A second victim was around the corner on Lexington Street. He was shot once in the face. Chambers died at the hospital, and the second victim was listed in serious but stable condition. Police said both victims were in the rear of the 800 block of Vine Street when one or more unknown men came and shot the victims with a handgun.

Friday, April 12

At 7:45 p.m. Southwest district police responded to a shooting in a house on the 2700 block of Kinsey Avenue in the Shipley Hill neighborhood. On arrival they found a man who had been shot in the arm, and he showed police to Tanya Raymond, a 42-year-old African-American woman who had been shot in the head. She was pronounced dead at the scene. On Saturday, April 13 police arrested Gerald Gaffney, a 22-year-old African-American man, and charged him with murder, attempted murder, armed robbery, and related charges.
