Murders this Week: 2; Murders this Year: 1

Monday, Dec. 31

5:37 P.M. On New Year’s Eve, Terry Nelson, a 24-year-old African-American man, was shot numerous times in the 2100 block of Bryant Avenue, a block from Mondawmin Mall. He died at an area hospital at 9:37 P.M., making him the 217th and final homicide victim of 2012.

Thursday, Jan. 3

The first murder victim of 2013 was a baby. Police received a call from Child Protective Services at 8:30 P.M. on Dec. 31 about a child-abuse case. Kendall Browne, a 7-month-old African-American boy, was at Pediatric Intensive Care at University of Maryland Medical Center with serious injuries. He died from head trauma on Jan. 3. The case is still open but police have identified a person of interest. This is the first time since data collection began for this column, in 2004, that there has been only one homicide six days into the year.

Updates:

According to the Baltimore City Police Department, 75 of 2012’s 217 homicides were closed by the end of the year. Seventy were closed by arrest and the other five were closed by exception. Below are some of the closures not previously reported in the column. The rest will appear in the updates for next week’s column.

Dominique Washington, a 23-year-old African-American man, was arrested on June 21 for the murder of Dominick Brown, a 24-year-old African-American man. Brown was shot several times in the 1500 block of Gough Street on May 13.

Demonte Palmer, a 34-year-old African-American man, was charged with murder and child abuse on July 4, for the murder of his infant daughter Olivia Palmer. Olivia, a 6-month-old African-American girl, died on May 27 from a brain hemorage,. She had been beaten to death and had healing injuries including burns to the face and neck.

Terrence Rollins, a 25-year-old African-American man, was arrested on July 26 for the murder of Deangelo Bess, a 25-year-old African-American man. Bess was shot in the head in a parking lot in the 1000 block of North Central Avenue on June 24.

Hakeem White, a 20-year-old African-American man, was arrested on Aug. 4 for the June 4 triple shooting that left Charles Goodman, a 23-year-old African-American man, dead.

Charles Blevins, a 23-year-old African-American man, was arrested on Aug. 24 for the murder of Desean Brown, an 18-year-old African-American male. Brown was shot in the head at a gas station in the 1400 block of East Fayette Street on June 2 when he tried to stop an argument.

Johnny Fleming, a 31-year-old African-American man, was arrested on Aug. 30 for the murder of Calvin Matthews, a 25-year-old African-American man. Matthews was stabbed in the chest on May 31 in the 3000 block of East Preston Street.

Marvin White, a 67-year-old African-American, was arrested on Sept. 2 for the murder of Kristie Hufnagel, a 41-year-old Caucasian woman. Hufnagel was asphyxiated in White’s home in the 100 block of West 29th Street some time before July 21.

Quinton Bass, a 26-year-old African-American man from Raleigh, North Carolina, was arrested on Sept. 17 for a double shooting in Mid-Town Belvedere that left one man dead. Jospeh Ulrich, a 40-year-old Caucasian man who went by Alex, and Larry Peterson, a 56-year-old Caucasian man, were at the Empire House, Peterson’s Inn near the intersection of Chase and Charles streets, when they were shot. Ulrich died and Peterson survived.

Jeffrey Weeks, a 29-year-old African-American man, was arrested on Oct. 10 for the murder of Quintin Butler, a 30-year-old African-American man. Butler was shot in the head in the 1100 block of Myrtle Avenue on May 29.

Ernest McNair, a 22-year-old African-American man, was arrested on Oct. 11 for the murder of Neal Gaines, a 41-year-old African-American man. Gaines was shot in the head in the 2100 block of Denison Street on June 28.

Darnell Gary, a 19-year-old African-American male, was arrested on Oct. 17 for the murder of Damon Vaughn, a 21-year-old African-American man. Vaughn and another 19-year-old African-American male were shot in the 2600 block of Boone Street in Better Waverly on Sept. 3. The other 19-year-old survived.

Adrian Briscoe, a 40-year-old African-American man, was arrested on Nov. 3 for the murder of Jermaine Shuron, a 37-year-old African-American man. Shuron was shot in the head on April 7 in the 1700 block of North Calhoun Street.

Wendielle Hall, a 25-year-old African-American woman, was arrested on Nov. 18 for the murder of Nabil Epps, a 34-year-old African-American man. Epps was stabbed in the chest on Sept. 21 in the 2700 block of West North Avenue.

The day after Hall’s arrest, Robert Carter, a 23-year-old African-American man, was arrested for the murder of Richard Gary, a 33-year-old Caucasian man. Gary was shot in a car in the 3900 block of Woodhaven Avenue on Nov. 17.

Jeremiah McBride, a 24-year-old African-American man, was arrested on Dec. 9 for the murder of Thomas Rawlings, a 24-year-old African-American man. Rawlings was stabbed to death inside his home in the 1800 block of North Fulton Avenue two days earlier.

Tavon Williams Arthur Barnett, a 19-year-old African-American male, was arrested on Dec. 12 for the murder of Terrence Seale, a 29-year-old African-American man. Seale was shot inside his home in the 1200 block of Linworth Avenue on Nov. 3.

Jewel Lucas, a 19-year-old African-American female, was arrested on Dec. 13 for the murder of Delma Barnes, a 35-year-old African-American man. Police believe that Barnes was intentionally hit by a car in the 5300 block of Frankford Avenue on Dec. 7.

Antoine Sellers’ murder case has been closed by exception. Sellers, a 27-year-old African-American man, was shot in the 600 block of Dumbarton Avenue on Sept. 22. iPolice believe he was killed by Curt Jones, a 28-year-old African-American man. Jones himself was murdered in the same block on Oct. 8. No one has been charged with Jones’s murder.

A 2011 case was closed at the end of December. Kenneth Brunetti, a 41-year-old African-American man, was convicted on Dec. 21 of murdering Lois Jean Vance Smyth, a 40-year-old Caucasian woman. The two had been friends in high school and got back in touch through Facebook. Smyth, who lived in Anne Arundel County, drove to Baltimore on May 29, 2011 to meet Brunetti for a cookout. At 6:19 p.m., less than four hours after she left her home, Smyth’s body was discovered by a jogger in Leakin Park. She had been shot in the head and was dead. Brunetti robbed and murdered his old friend. He was arrested on May 31 after he was seen using Smyth’s car. He also had her bank card.
