Wednesday, Oct. 24

8:01 P.M. Alonzo Gladden, a 24-year-old African-American man, was on leave from the Navy, visiting relatives. He and a relative parked a car in the 2700 block of Marbourne Avenue in Lakeland. They got out of the car. According to WBAL-TV, the relative was Gladden’s younger brother and the pair was bringing groceries to their grandmother, who lives in the block. Two individuals exited a black four-door sedan in the block and started shooting at Gladden and his relative. Gladden was hit repeatedly. His brother was not shot. Gladden died at a city hospital at 9:16 P.M.

11:02 P.M. Later that night, James Utley, a 26-year-old African-American, was shot in the head and torso in the 1400 block of East Preston Street. He died at an area hospital less than an hour later. This is the second murder in this block this year. It is also the ninth homicide in Oliver, the most murderous neighborhood in the city, despite being just five blocks by six blocks.

Thursday, Oct. 25

2:26 P.M. In the middle of the afternoon, police found John Planters, a 21-year-old African-American man, lying in a grassy lot behind the 2200 block of Annapolis Road. He had been shot in the head and was dead.

Saturday, Oct. 27

8:45 a.m. Homicide was called to the 700 block of North Rose Street for a domestic stabbing. Shawn Brown, a 40-year-old African-American man, had been stabbed in the torso and was being transported by medics to a nearby hospital. He died there at 9:18 a.m. A suspect has been identified and Homicide detectives are working with the Family Crimes Unit and the State’s Attorney’s Office on the investigation.

Updates

Veronica Alford, a 49-year-old African-American woman, was charged on Oct. 26 with obstructing and hindering a police investigation, being an accessory after the fact, and giving false statements to police for her involvement in the death of Monae Turnage, a 13-year-old African-American girl. Turnage was shot on March 3 by a minor playing with a gun. According to charging documents, the fatal shooting occurred in Alford’s home. Alford is accused of helping the shooter—her 13-year-old son—and another boy move Turnage’s body out of the house and put Turnage in the backyard of another home in the block and then cover it with garbage. Alford also allegedly removed the gun from her house and put it in the car of her daughter’s boyfriend, a Baltimore City Police officer. Alford’s son pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and his 12-year-old friend pleaded guilty to being an accessory. Alford’s older son Martinez Armstrong, the 21-year-old African-American man who was allegedly in possesion of the gun, has been charged with being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
