The Dec. 6 murder of Carlos Martinez, a 27-year-old Hispanic man, occurred at the intersection of Fairmount and North East Avenue, not Northeast Avenue as previously reported. We regret the error.

The death of Christopher Gilliam, a 45-year-old African-American man, has been removed from the homicide rolls. Gilliam’s stabbing has been reclassified as justified.

The death of Shirley Garrett, a 67-year-old African-American woman, was added to the rolls this week. Garrett was found in her home in the 800 block of East 34th Street in Waverly with numerous head injuries on March 31. She was taken to a city hospital, where she died on Dec. 18 at 8:53 a.m. Her death was ruled a homicide. Garrett’s 14-year-old grandson Hassanhii Garrett was arrested the day after the attack. According to The Baltimore Sun, Hassanhii Garrett told police he was angry about the way his grandmother treated him so he hit her in the head twice with a hammer while she was sleeping. Shirley Garrett tried to get away but fell into a mirror. While she was down, her grandson allegedly punched her in the head four times. Hassanhii Garrett was initially charged as an adult with attempted first-degree murder and related charges but the case was remanded to the juvenile system on Aug. 1. As juvenile cases are sealed, no further information about the case is available. This is the second woman whose grandson has been charged with her death in the last two months. Shirley Tyler, a 67-year-old African-American woman, was asphyxiated in her home in the 3200 block of Spaulding Avenue on Nov. 5. Her grandson, Demond Tyler, a 36-year-old African-American man, was arrested and charged with her murder two days later.

11:05 p.m. Damond Wallace, a 30-year-old African-American man, was shot several times in the 2700 block of Giles Road in Cherry Hill. He died less than an hour later at an area hospital.

On Dec. 19, Abron Scott, a 44-year-old African-American man, was sentenced to life plus 40 years in prison for the murder of Shelton Elliott, a 43-year-old African-American man. Scott robbed a group of people in an apartment in the 500 block of North Carey Street on Sept. 9, 2009. He told everyone to kneel but Elliott refused. Scott and Elliott fought and Scott shot Elliott several times, killing him.

Dajuan Marshall, a 29-year-old African-American man, was sentenced to life plus 20 years on Dec. 20. Marshall and Kedar Anderson, a 25-year-old African-American man, kidnapped and killed Kenneth Jones, a 26-year-old African-American man. Anderson and Marshall forced Jones into a trunk at gunpoint on June 8, 2008. He was found about 40 minutes later in the 4500 block of Bonner Road, dead from numerous close-range gunshots to the head. Jones was allegedly the head of the Pasadena Denver Lanes Bloods and Marshall allegedly led the Bounty Hunter Bloods. The two gangs had been fighting. Anderson, who was convicted of the actual murder, has not yet been sentenced.
