Murders this Year: 192

As of Dec. 19, there have been 24 fewer homicides this year than in 2010. Based on last year’s rate, the difference is more than a typical month’s worth of murders.

The man stabbed to death near the intersection of Fairmount and Northeast avenues on Dec. 6 has been identified as Carlos Martinez, a 27-year-old Hispanic man. The man stabbed to death in his home in the 2500 block of Violet Avenue on Dec. 10 has been identified as Dwight Jones, a 58-year-old African-American man.

9:20 p.m. Lawrence Edwards, a 23-year-old African-American man, was shot numerous times in the street in the 2200 block of Elsinore Avenue in Mount Holly. He was taken to a hospital where he died less than an hour later.

Saturday, Dec. 17

10:04 p.m. Jeffrey Smith, a 32-year-old African-American man, walked out of a convenience store in the 4200 block of Nicholas Avenue. Someone came up to him and shot him repeatedly and then ran away. Smith was taken to a hospital, where he died at 10:47 p.m. This is the 10th murder this year in Belair-Edison, the most murderous neighborhood in the city.

Sunday, Dec. 18

12:45 a.m. A few hours later, police were called to Bon Secours Hospital. Dayon Barnes, a 27-year-old African-American man, was at the hospital being treated for gunshot wounds throughout his body. Barnes was transported to another hospital due to the seriousness of his injuries and died at 1:48 a.m. Barnes was shot while sitting in a car in the 200 block of North Smallwood Street near the West Baltimore MARC station.

Update

Kedar Anderson, a 25-year-old African-American man, was convicted of murder, kidnapping, and other charges on Dec. 12. Anderson was involved in the kidnapping and killing of Kenneth Jones, a 26-year-old African-American man. Jones was at Custom House Avenue and Water Street near the Inner Harbor on June 8, 2008, when Anderson and Dajuan Marshall, a 29-year-old African-American man, forced him into a trunk at gunpoint. He was later found dead from numerous gunshots to the head in the 4500 block of Bonner Road. Police say Jones was the head of the Pasadena Denver Lanes Bloods and Marshall led the Bounty Hunter Bloods; the two gangs were rivals. Marshall was found guilty on Oct. 24 of conspiracy to murder and participation in a criminal street gang resulting in death.
