Murders this Year: 189

The death of Robert Watkins, a 35-year-old African-American man, was added to the homicide rolls this week, 19 years after he was shot. Watkins was standing by the intersection of North Avenue and North Charles Street in what is now the Station North neighborhood at 1:49 a.m. on Aug. 17, 1992. He was 16 at the time. Someone shot Watkins in the back, but he survived. On July 10, 2011, at 12:30 p.m. a family member found him lying on the floor. He was taken to a city hospital where he was pronounced dead 11 minutes later. His death has been ruled the result of the 1992 shooting. The case has been closed by exception but police were not able to provide details at press time.

Tuesday, Dec. 6

12:15 p.m. A Hispanic man was found at the intersection of Northeast and Fairmount avenues suffering from a puncture wound to the chest from an unknown weapon. He was taken to an area hospital, where he died less than an hour later. Police are waiting until his family has been notified of his murder to release his name. He is the fifth Hispanic male murdered this year.

Wednesday, Dec. 7

8:29 p.m. Police were called to an apartment building in the 3500 block of Woodland Avenue in Central Park Heights. When they arrived, they met a woman in the parking lot. She had been in an altercation with a man. Police went into the apartment building and found the man, Christopher Gilliam, a 45-year-old African-American, stabbed. He died at an area hospital at 9:21 p.m. Police have a person of interest in the case but no one has been charged. This is the sixth murder in Central Park Heights this year.

Thursday, Dec. 8

10:57 p.m. Brandon Hudson, a 22-year-old African-American man who was attending Morgan State University, was discovered shot in the head in his apartment in the 2900 block of North Calvert Street in Charles Village. He was dead. This is the first murder in Charles Village this year. There were four in 2010.

Saturday, Dec. 10

9:54 a.m. A 58-year-old African-American man was found in a building in the 2500 block of Violet Avenue. He had trauma to his body and at least one stab wound. He was taken to an area hospital where he died at 10:37 a.m. Police are waiting until his family has been notified of his death to release his name.
