Murders this Week: 5

Murders this Year: 180

The man shot to death in an alley off the 4100 block of Parkwood Avenue on Nov. 5 has been identified as Davon Diggs, a 21-year-old African-American man.

The death of Shirley Tyler, a 67-year-old African-American woman, was added to the homicide rolls this week. On Nov. 5 at about 8:40 a.m., police were called to a home in the 3200 block of Spaulding Avenue. Tyler’s granddaughter found Tyler dead and called 911. At first, police were concerned that Tyler might have died as a result of toxic gas in the home, because the other person who lived there with her, Demond Tyler, a 36-year-old African-American man, seemed disoriented. Demond Tyler was taken to a city hospital and the house was checked for gas but none was found. The Medical Examiner’s office ruled Shirley Tyler’s death a homicide by asphyxiation, and Demond Tyler was arrested for her murder on Nov. 7.

Wednesday, Nov. 9

9:11 p.m. Santos Villanueva, a 25-year-old Hispanic man, was discovered lying in the middle of the street in the 4300 block of Loch Raven Boulevard near the Northwood Shopping Center. He had been shot in the torso and was dead. Villanueva is the fourth Hispanic person murdered this year.

Friday, Nov. 11

5:42 p.m. Police were directed to a residence in the 2600 block of Kentucky Avenue by a person who heard a gunshot coming from the location. Police entered and found an as yet unidentified woman shot in the head. She was dead. She is the 14th female murdered this year and the second in six days.

Saturday, Nov. 12

4:49 p.m. Police got a call for shots fired in the 1000 block of Pennsylvania Avenue in Upton. When an officer pulled up, he saw people running from the scene. Several people waved him over to the victim, Darren Robertson, a 20-year-old African-American man, who was lying on the sidewalk. Robertson was shot in the face and died at an area hospital at 5:37 p.m. This is the 15th murder in the Central police district this year.

7:32 p.m. Kevin Lofland, an 18-year-old African-American man, and a 17-year-old African-American male were in the 2200 block of Aiken Street when they were shot. Lofland was hit in the collarbone and died at an area hospital at 8:08 p.m. The 17-year-old was hit in the hip and ran from the scene. He was found around the corner on Darley Avenue and taken to an area hospital; he is expected to survive. This is the ninth murder in East Baltimore Midway. The neighborhood, which is approximately six blocks by 11 blocks, is now tied with the Belair-Edison neighborhood for the most murderous in the city.
