Murders this Year: 153

The death of Marcus Harvell, a 17-year-old African-American male, was removed from the homicide rolls last week. Harvell was shot in the chest inside a home in the 900 block of Herndon Court in Brooklyn on July 20. On Sept. 16, his death was reclassified as an accidental shooting.

Monday, Sept. 19

5:40 p.m. A woman flagged down a police car in the 100 block of North Poppleton Street near the University of Maryland at Baltimore. Gregory Parker, a 17-year-old African-American male, had been stabbed in the back. He was taken to an area hospital where he died at 6:18 p.m. Parker is the 13th minor murdered this year, and the second in five days.

11:25 p.m. Thomas Powell, a 21-year-old African-American man, was shot repeatedly in the 400 block of North East Avenue near Ellwood Park. He died an hour later.

Tuesday, Sept. 20

3:50 p.m. Isaiah Roane, a 29-year-old African-American man, died two weeks after he was shot. Police were called to the 3300 block of Belle Avenue for a shooting on Sept. 7 at 1:44 p.m. A 20-year-old African-American man was found inside a home in the block, shot in the right arm and torso. A second victim, Roane, was discovered in the driver’s seat of a car parked at a gas station. He had been shot in the torso. Police determined that the shooting occurred in the 3500 block of Dolfield Avenue near the West Cold Spring Metro station. Both men were taken to area hospitals. The man shot in the arm survived.

Wednesday, Sept. 21

4:33 p.m. In the middle of the afternoon, a black Lexus was found at the intersection of 34th Street and Ellerslie Avenue between Waverly Elementary and Stadium Place. The motor was running and the car was in drive. Robert James, a 30-year-old African-American man, was unresponsive in the driver’s seat with his foot on the brake. He had been shot once in the head. He died at a local hospital at 6:52 a.m. the next day. At least 16 people have been murdered in cars this year.

Sunday, Sept. 25

3:52 a.m. Two as yet unidentified men were shot in the head in the 3900 block of Dolfield Avenue in Northwest Baltimore. One of the men was found lying on the ground bleeding from his head. The other was found 15 feet away bleeding from his face. Both were pronounced dead at the scene at 4 a.m.

Updates

On Sept. 20, Charles Thomas, a 47-year-old African-American man, was convicted of murdering Alvin Alston, a 45-year-old African-American man. Thomas came up to Alston at noon on Sept. 13, 2009, at the busy intersection of Cold Spring Lane and Reisterstown Road and shot Alston in the head.

Also on Sept. 20, James Lee Fortune, a 36-year-old African-American man, was sentenced to 90 years in prison. Fortune shot two men at a liquor store in the 1100 block of North Stricker Street on Jan. 24, 2008. Sidney Millner, a 25-year-old African-American man, was shot numerous times and died. The other victim was shot in the neck and survived but was paralyzed from the neck down.
