Murders this Year: 142

The death of a 1-year-old was added to the homicide rolls this week. On Aug. 8 at 5:17 p.m. an unidentified baby boy was being fed in the 5600 block of Woodmont Avenue. Someone placed him in a bassinet. The person propped the baby up with a bottle in his mouth and left. According to that person, the baby was not heard crying or making any noises. An hour later, someone went in to check on the boy and found him unresponsive with vomit on his face. Someone called 911 and tried to perform CPR on the child. He was taken to an area hospital and pronounced dead less than an hour later. There were no obvious signs of trauma but the autopsy on Aug. 25 determined that his death was a homicide. According to police the cause of death is listed as “other.” No arrests have been made in the case. He is the second small child murdered in August.

Thursday, Sept. 1

12:30 p.m. Police were called to a home in the 900 block of Leadenhall Street about two blocks west of Federal Hill for an assault. When they arrived, they were met by Gary Allmond, a 51-year-old African-American man. Allmond allegedly told police that he had gotten into a physical altercation with a woman. During the fight, the woman stopped breathing. She was taken to an area hospital and pronounced dead at 1:44 p.m. Police have not released the name of the woman, who was living with Allmond at the location, because her family has not been notified of her death. Allmond was arrested and charged with her murder.

Sunday, Sept. 4

12:15 p.m. A police officer was patrolling in Middle East when he was flagged down by someone who directed him to the 500 block of North Chester Street. There, police found a woman standing outside screaming and crying. She told police, “He’s dead upstairs.” In the home, police found Antonio Laws, a 31-year-old African-American man, shot to death.
