Murders this Year: 127

Dwayne Hawkins, a 28-year-old African-American man, died this week of complications resulting from a 2008 incident. On June 13 of that year, at 1:58 a.m., police were called to 642 Cokesbury Ave., near the intersection of 25th Street and Greenmount Avenue. When they got there, they found Hawkins on fire, with burns on 65 percent of his body. Hawkins had been living in an assisted-living facility before his death.

Tuesday, July 26

6:42 a.m. Police were called to a fire at 4301 Nicholas Ave., near the Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery. The fire department put out the fire and discovered two men and a woman inside the house. All three had been shot in the head. The two men, who have not yet been identified, were pronounced dead on the scene. The woman, who has also not been identified, was taken to an area hospital, where she died at 7:19 a.m. According to The Baltimore Sun, a 911 caller had reported gunshots in the vicinity early in the morning, before the fire, but when police investigated they found nothing.

NOON Ryshawn Cox, a 21-year-old African-American man, was found in the 900 block of North Belnord Avenue, in the Madison-Eastend neighborhood, with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to an area hospital, where he died at 1:44 p.m.

Wednesday, July 27

1:28 a.m. An unidentified African-American man was driving on the 3600 block of Chesterfield Avenue, just west of Herring Run Park, when someone started shooting at him. The victim attempted to drive away, but hit a parked car. Police transported the man to an area hospital, where he died at 1:59 a.m.

Friday, July 29

10:53 a.m. Flies were swarming around an abandoned Lexus in a vacant lot at the intersection of Preston and North Gay streets, near Collington Square Park. Police discovered the body of Hassaan Frank, a 29-year-old African-American man, in the trunk. He had been shot in the head.

Saturday, July 30

2:40 a.m. Three people were shot while walking in the 4800 block of Bowland Avenue, just east of Herring Run Park. Gerald Bonner, a 31-year-old African-American man, was transported to an area hospital, where he died at 2:43 a.m. The other two victims survived.

Sunday, July 31

9:12 p.m. Dominic Perry, a 15-year-old African-American male, and Anthony Tarbert, a 15-year-old Caucasian male, were shot multiple times by an unknown suspect in the 1100 block of Wedgewood Road, near Leakin Park, on Sunday night. Police were called to the scene but initially only found Perry, who was taken to an area hospital, where he died at 9:57 p.m. At 4:25 a.m. the next morning, Tarbert’s family found his body about a block away.
