Murders this Year: 110

The man shot in the 1400 block of Stonewood Road on July 1 has been identified as William Daughtry III, a 20-year-old African-American. The Baltimore Police Department’s murder count for this year is 109 compared to this column’s 110. As of press time, police could not account for the discrepancy.

Monday, July 4

9:48 p.m. Joseph Calo, a 26-year-old Caucasian man from Alabama, was watching the Independence Day fireworks display in the 700 block of Eastern Avenue near the Pier Six Concert Pavilion. One of his companions got into a fight. During the course of the fight, Calo was stabbed in the neck with a bottle. He died at a city hospital at 10:44 p.m. Marcus Harris, a 32-year-old African-American man, turned himself in to police headquarters on July 9. He has been charged with Calo’s murder.

Tuesday, July 5

6:45 p.m. Sterling Kelly, a 29-year-old African-American man, died at an area hospital. Kelly was shot repeatedly in the 3700 block of Harlem Avenue in Edmondson Village on June 21 at 3:42 p.m. Frederick Williams, a 26-year-old African-American man, has been charged with Kelly’s murder.

Saturday, July 9

1:29 a.m. Two groups of people started fighting at the intersection of Fayette and Charles streets in the heart of downtown shortly before last call. A 25-year-old African-American man was stabbed during the fight and died at a nearby hospital at 2:19 a.m. Police are waiting until his family has been notified of his death to release the man’s name. This is the fifth murder downtown this year, all of which have occurred in the last three months. There were two murders downtown in all of 2010.

Sunday, July 10

2:30 a.m. Police found Richard Mills, a 46-year-old African-American man, sitting in a pick-up truck in the 1700 block of Gorsuch Avenue by Clifton Park. He had been stabbed in the stomach and died at a local hospital an hour later.

2:36 a.m. Six minutes after Mills was discovered, Jerel McFadden, a 22-year-old African-American man, was exiting a building in the 1500 block of Lester Morton Court near Johns Hopkins Hospital. As he stepped outside someone shot him in the stomach. He died at 3:10 a.m. at an area hospital.

11:09 a.m. Later that day, Patsy Person, a 43-year-old African-American woman, was found dead inside a home in the 200 block of North Belnord Avenue in East Baltimore. She had blunt force trauma to her head. Person is the seventh female murdered this year.
