Updates

On Feb. 25, Cleaven Williams Jr., a 35-year-old African-American man, was convicted of murdering his wife Veronica Williams, a 29-year-old African-American woman. The Williamses were at the Eastside District Courthouse on Nov. 17, 2008, for a hearing on a protective order Veronica had taken out against her husband eight days earlier. Veronica had made domestic violence complaints against Cleaven going back to 2005. Cleaven approached Veronica at the Walgreens across the street from the courthouse. He tried to pull her into a car. When she resisted, Cleaven, who was the president of the Greater Greenmount Community Association at the time, stabbed Veronica in the neck. An off-duty police officer shot Cleaven twice to stop the attack. Cleaven survived. Veronica died three days later at an area hospital. In court, Cleaven argued that he killed his wife in self-defense.

The unidentified person found dead in the 3300 block of Virginia Avenue on Feb. 19 has been identified as Anthony Trent, a 25-year-old African-American man. A Feb. 22 Baltimore Sun article identified Trent as a transgendered woman. According to the article, Trent went by the name Tyra and had received services from Trans-United, a transgender outreach organization. The Baltimore Police Department could not confirm that Trent was transgendered, stating that the victim is listed as male in police and court records but was found in women’s clothing.

Davon Wilkins, a 19-year-old African-American man, was indicted on Feb. 14 for the murder of Renardo Broom, a 16-year-old African-American male from Remington. Broom was shot in the chest on July 1, 2010, in the courtyard of an apartment building in the 700 block of West North Avenue. According to the Sun, Wilkins allegedly shot and killed Broom over money bet on a dice game.
