A police-involved shooting this weekend left two dead and four wounded. At 1:15 a.m. on Jan. 9, police were called for a disturbance at Club Select in the 400 block of North Paca Street downtown. The disturbance spilled out into a parking lot. William Torbit, a 33-year-old African-American man who had been a Baltimore Police officer for 11 years, broke up a fight. Torbit, who was in plainclothes but had his badge and gun, was then attacked by a group of men. During the melee, five officers, including Torbit, fired a total of 41 shots. A police officer was shot in the foot. Three women suffered graze wounds. Torbit and Sean Gamble, a 22-year-old African-American man, were shot and killed. No civilians fired weapons during the incident. Police are reviewing evidence in order to construct a time line of the shooting. As of press time, neither Torbit’s nor Gamble’s deaths are included in the official homicide tally.
Wednesday, Jan. 5
1:55 p.m. Deandre Garris, a 34-year-old African-American man, was discovered shot in the stomach outside his home in the 3500 block of Woodstock Avenue in Belair-Edison. Someone saw Garris being chased by a man in the 2700 block of Mayfield Avenue. The man was shooting at Garris. Garris was hit in the stomach but made his way roughly a block to his home. He died at an area hospital at 2:55 p.m.
Sunday, Jan. 9
7:02 a.m. A car was idling in an alley behind the 300 block of East 33rd Street by Union Memorial Hospital in Oakenshawe. Leon Smith, a 34-year-old African-American man, was found in the driver’s seat riddled with bullets. He died at a local hospital less than an hour later. This is the second murder in Oakenshawe in three months.
11:23 p.m. Two unidentified men were found in the laundry room of an apartment complex in the 1700 block of Gwynns Falls Parkway near Mondawmin Mall. They had been shot in the head and were dead.
The first person murdered this year has been identified as David Jones, a 21-year-old African-American man.
Jonathan Gilbert, a 19-year-old African-American man, was arrested on Dec. 22, 2010, for the murder of Brian Tailor, a 23-year-old African-American man. Tailor was shot repeatedly in the 6000 block of Marjorie Lane on Dec. 18, 2010. Gilbert has also been charged with armed robbery, assault, theft, and handgun violations in connection with this incident.
