Monday, Oct. 11
9:11 a.m. Harvey McCall, a 42-year-old African-American man, was shot in the head in an alley behind the 2600 block of Shirley Avenue in Northwest Baltimore. He died before he could be taken to a hospital.
Wednesday, Oct. 13
9:51 p.m. Sherman Payne, a 56-year-old African-American man, was discovered lying on some steps in the 800 block of North Brice Street. He had been shot in the head and died nearly an hour later at a nearby hospital.
11 p.m. Police were called to a home in the 3800 block of Glengyle Avenue because a child wasn’t breathing. When they arrived medics were there trying to revive a 6-month-old infant. The baby was taken to a nearby hospital, where she died at 11:58 p.m. The girl’s father was interviewed by police. Timothy Lewis, a 20-year-old African-American male, initially said he found her not breathing and called for help. However, according to police, he choked his daughter to death because she wouldn’t stop crying. He was charged with her murder on Oct. 15. Police have declined to release the baby’s name. This is the third child under 3 years old murdered this year.
Saturday, Oct. 16
10:11 p.m. Baltimore City Police Detective Brian Stevenson, a 37-year-old African-American man, was celebrating his upcoming birthday in Canton. He got into an argument with Sian James, a 25-year-old African-American man, over a parking space in the 2800 block of Hudson Street. James allegedly picked up a piece of concrete during the argument and hit Stevenson on the side of the head. Stevenson died at a local hospital at 10:46 p.m. James was arrested and charged with Stevenson’s murder.
Several recent homicide victims have been identified. The fatal victim in the double shooting in the 3200 block of Belair Road on Sept. 22 was Sean Cooper, a 20-year-old African-American man. Yassmin Lindo, a 36-year-old African-American woman, was stabbed to death in the 1900 block of McKean Avenue on Sept. 28. Michael Morrell, a 51-year-old African-American man, was shot to death in the 3100 block of Grantley Avenue on Oct. 9. James Ingram, a 46-year-old African-American man, was shot and killed in his home in the 3000 block of Presbury Street.
On Oct. 7, police arrested Yahmell Montague, a 26-year-old African-American man, for the April 11 murder of Nelson Armstrong, a 20-year-old African-American man. Armstrong was shot repeatedly in a parking lot in the 1100 block of East North Avenue.
Darius Sheppard, a 31-year-old African-American man, was arrested on Oct. 8 for the Sept. 30 murder of Arthur Peacock, a 34-year-old African-American man. Peacock was eating in the 800 block of West Lexington Street when he was shot to death.
Craig Bobian, a 19-year-old African-American man, was convicted of the robbery and murder of Anthony Benitez, a 21-year-old Hispanic man. Bobian; Aikeam Friend, a 20-year-old African-American man; and Tavon Dale, a 20-year-old African-American man, robbed Benitez on June 3, 2009. According to the State’s Attorney’s Office, Benitez was a drug dealer. Bobian and Dale entered Benitez’s apartment, claiming they wanted to buy drugs from him. Once inside, Bobian and Dale drew their guns and robbed Benitez of drugs. One of them fatally shot Benitez during the robbery. Dale pleaded guilty to the murder on April 15 of this year. Friend, who drove the getaway car, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit robbery on Sept. 18, 2009.
Jerome Williams, a 17-year-old African-American male, and Charles McGaney, a 22-year-old African-American man, were convicted of murdering former City Councilmember Kenneth Harris Sr., a 45-year-old African-American man. Gary Collins, a 22-year-old African-American man, was found not guilty of murder but was convicted of armed robbery, assault, and other charges. Harris was killed during a robbery on Sept. 20, 2008.
On Oct. 13, police arrested Trebor Woodard, a 34-year-old African-American man, for the murder of Kirk Carter, a 22-year-old African-American man. Carter was shot and stabbed in a house in the 2300 block of Sidney Avenue on Oct. 6.
Also on the 13th, James Spriggs, a 29-year-old African-American man, was sentenced to life in prison. Spriggs was fighting over drug territory with Brian Goodwin, a 21-year-old African-American man. On June 19, 2008, Spriggs approached Goodwin in the 500 block of Bloom Street and shot him in the back and the back of the head.
Marquise Evans, a 24-year-old African-American man, was sentenced to life in prison plus 20 years on Oct. 14. Evans was convicted of murdering Thaddeus McCauley Jr., a 20-year-old African-American man, on Dec. 19, 2008, in the 1400 block of Homestead Street. Evans shot himself in the leg during the crime, leading to his arrest.
