Many Fells Point locals know Michael “Mickey” Hayes as a jack-of-all-trades who, with a wide smile on his face, hangs around the bar district’s cobblestones, looking to get paid to do just about anything. He’ll wash windows, clean out basements, hang drywall, and clean cars and boats. “I’ve been doing this about 15 years, and I’ve met a lot of people,” he says. Hayes started out in this line of work as another guy’s aide-de-camp, working odd jobs for people and businesses north of Eastern Avenue on Broadway, he explains, but that guy “told me one day I just had to go out and get my own clients, so I did.” Though Hayes recently got a full-time position as a floor-buffer, he still makes time for his handyman gig on the side, to make a little extra dough. “Even before I got that job,” he says, “I invested in a cell phone. Now I don’t need to hang around so much, because my clients can just call me.”
