Bay Pay
Bill introduced to allow city to collect stormwater remediation fees
Published: November 28, 2012
Another bill introduced in the Nov. 19 City Council meeting will give the city authority to add a new “stormwater remediation fee” to the already increasing sewer and water fees the city charges.
It’s part of a statewide effort to clean up the Chesapeake Bay. A state bill became law last April, requiring a “local watershed protection fund” be created in the city, the county, plus Anne Arundel, Frederick, Harford, Howard, Montgomery, Prince George’s, Carroll, and Charles counties. The ordinance provides for the calculation of the fee, a system of credits, and myriad other bureaucratic details. Left out: any estimation of the actual fee itself.
Now how much will you pay?
Public Works spokesperson Kurt Kocher says expect to pay about $18 more per quarter for the typical Baltimore homeowner.
