1 Ravens

After this weekend’s heroic, historic double-overtime defeat of the Denver Broncos, BCPR wanted to place the team somehow higher than No. 1 on the list. The shrieks heard in every nook and cranny of Charm City when Jacoby Jones caught that miracle last-minute pass, and the crowds that flooded the streets of Federal Hill after Justin Tucker kicked the winning 47-yard field goal are testaments to the enduring joy the team brings to Baltimore’s citizens. Beware, Brady, this is a team of destiny.

2 Martin O’Malley

With polls showing strong support for gun control, the governor introduced a plan to ban assault rifles and high-capacity magazines while imposing some of the country’s strictest rules on licensing guns, increasing school security, and improving aid to the severely mentally ill. It’s a broad, common-sense proposal that ought to be a blueprint for federal policy. Add in word that Maryland schools were best in the country for a fifth-straight year and Marty’s 2016 presidential resume is looking better every day.

3 The Flu

As the state legislature returns for its 90-day session, it can’t help but improve on last year’s, which ended in total chaos that was only resolved after two contentious special sessions. This year, O’Malley and the Dem majority seem poised to tackle another ambitious agenda, including ending the death penalty and increasing gun restrictions. Come on, Annapolis, you’re better than Washington. Get ’er done.

4 Everyman Theatre

After years of producing well-chosen, meticulously crafted theater, the Station North anchor heads west to a new Fayette Street location, aiming to advance another arts renaissance on the west side (“Everyman a King,” Feature, page 12). Kudos to Everyman for elevating Baltimore’s cultural landscape, and to Single Carrot Theater, which will use the company’s Charles Street digs.
