Sizzlin’ Summer

Sizzlin’ Summer: Summer in Baltimore is a sensory explosion, from the scent of Old Bay-smothered steamed crabs and the taste of marshmallow-topped chocolate snoballs to the smell of Ocean City salt water mixed with sunscreen and the vision of fireflies. 5/15/2013

1 Michael Bloomberg

Hizzoner rarely makes the BCPR, but New York’s mayor appeared here in town—just before Sandy struck—to offer support for Question 6, the same-sex marriage ballot question. He also made a $250,000 donation to the cause and co-wrote an op-ed supporting the measure. He returned to NYC in time to gruffly but sagely steward his city through the storm—including making the wise decision to postpone the New York Marathon—even whipping out his horrific Spanglish. Excellentementos!

2 City Council

In a flurry of do-gooding, the council tackled funding for school construction (see “Schoolhouse Plot,” Mobtown Beat, Oct. 31) and charter schools (“Hit & Run,” page 11), and a vast new zoning code (“Zoning Revolution,” Mobtown Beat, Oct. 31)—12 of 14 members even voted for a moratorium on construction of a new youth jail, siding with Occupy Baltimore activists. Hey guys—you’re not up for re-election this year! (But keep it up!)

3 Sandy

Metro Baltimore was mostly spared the massive storm’s worst impact, but the destruction and dozens of deaths in the New York metro area reverberate south, and we feel their pain. Not surprisingly, hundreds of local efforts large and small have sprung up to spirit relief up Interstate 95. Find one and do what you can. Winter’s coming.

4 Denise Whiting

Just when Baltimore was ready to let the Café Hon owner off the hook for that whole trademarking “Hon” snafu, the cat’s-eyeglass-clad controversy-magnet posts a picture on the restaurant’s Facebook page of an employee in blackface—a no-no at least since the Johnson administration—for a Halloween costume of Whitney Houston, complete with white smudge of fake cocaine around the nose. Classy, hon.

5 Pastor Luke Robinson

Like many asshats before him (c.f., Pat Robertson), the Frederick pastor thinks he knows why God kills people in natural disasters. In this case, Robinson has figured out that God killed all those people in Sandy because Bloomberg supported Maryland’s marriage equality effort. Genius! As for all those killed outside New York City? “Well, maybe God’s aim isn’t so good,” Robinson just might say—because he’s a fucking idiot.
