Sizzlin’ Summer

Sizzlin’ Summer: Summer in Baltimore is a sensory explosion, from the scent of Old Bay-smothered steamed crabs and the taste of marshmallow-topped chocolate snoballs to the smell of Ocean City salt water mixed with sunscreen and the vision of fireflies. 5/15/2013

1 Ravens

Less than 24 hours after Torrey Smith’s 19-year-old brother died in a motorcycle crash, a teary Smith took the field and went on to score two touchdowns and rally the team to victory. Playing so soon after a tragedy might’ve looked like misplaced priorities pregame, but after watching teammates surround and support the grieving receiver, it was clear that being around the extended family of team and city was just what Smith needed.

2 Television

The Emmys shined brightly on Baltimore, awarding Julia Louis-Dreyfus best lead actress in a comedy for her turn in Veep, shot here in Charm City, and best supporting actress in a comedy to Modern Family star and Ruxton native Julie Bowen, who mentioned nipple covers three times in her speech. Stay classy, Baltimore!

3 City Paper

We already know our Best of Baltimore issue is widely read by power players, but it was still nice to see the Baltimore City Council issue an official proclamation congratulating Baltimore Brew council reporter Mark Reutter—who routinely exposes their failings—for his “Best Online Journalist” nod. BCPR guesses the proclamations for “Best Fiasco” (The Audit Bill), “Best Long-Distance Legislating” (Rikki Spector), and “Best Politician Who Needs a Slap Upside the Head” (SRB) are jammed in the City Hall printer.

4 Baltimore Brew

In addition to the Reutter win and a nod in the Readers Poll for “Best Baltimore-Related Web Site,” the Brew continued to percolate change, effectively killing the city’s plans to pave over part of Patterson Park for a senior center and parking lot—which sparked community outrage and petitions—by unearthing an old easement that seems to require state approval for the move. Brew for Mayor?

5 Towson University

First racist students, headed by a dude who paraded the Confederate flag in front of Martin Luther King Jr.’s Alabama church, try to start a white student union, then at homecoming, one is shot and six are arrested in violence on York Road. Straighten up or we’ll make you Towson State again.
