Another Hole in the Road
Helicopter spots a new void in Monument Street
Published: October 10, 2012
Thursday afternoon, Oct. 4, another sinkhole opened up on the 2300 block of East Monument Street—this one just 125 feet from where city crews have been working to close a hole that opened on July 25 and expanded in late August after heavy rains. A WBAL helicopter pilot spotted the new void from the air. WJZ TV reported that heavy equipment used by the Department of Public Works had vibrated the new hole open, breaking a gas line that then had to be capped off. The work crew had been trying to install a metal containment sleeve to contain the existing sinkhole, says DPW spokesman Kurt Kocher: “We’ve made progress. We’ve been essentially installing a new tunnel inside of the tunnel. That’s 9 feet in diameter.” The street has been closed since July and, it appears, will be closed for some time. “We were originally looking at Nov. 5,’ Kocher says. “This is going to push it back some.”
