WEDNESDAY: Don’t miss: Baltimore doom/thrash/noise/black-metal band Pleasure Wizard makes hell at the Sidebar with Left and Right, Atlas, and Tendrills.
THURSDAY: Baltimore’s New Media “creates a unique landscape of sound and word” at the Ottobar with Car Party and Like the Stars. An event called “ELXR: Bass Rush” takes over Sonar with Kyur4 Gl!tch, DJ Beast, and more. Sac Au Lait does Dixieland at Joe Squared Station North.
FRIDAY: Pianos Become the Teeth, some of Baltimore’s finest in true-school screamo, celebrates a record release at the Ottobar with Tiger’s Jaw, Balance and Composure, and more. Baltimore MC Bar Cardy takes the mic at Sonar with DJ Sugar Bear, Miss Cream, Only, and many more. Los Angeles lo-fi/out-folk project Emperor X plays the Golden West with Other Colors. Badfish pays tribute to Sublime, which is a touring and recording band again, at Rams Head Live with Yellow Dubmarine, Scotty Don’t, and the Substance. Baltimore jazz drummer Eric Kennedy returns to An die Musik with backing lineup TBA. Jack Everly and the Brothers Gershwin do two nights and a Sunday day show at the Meyerhoff. ZO2, of the American television series Z Rock, performs at Towson’s Recher Theatre. Don’t miss: Baltimore queer-art-rock-lo-fi-fuzz-pop finery the Degenerettes celebrate an album release at the Metro Gallery with Saddle of Centaur, Schwervon!, and Snacks. Guests Rapdragons, Rip Knoxx, and Phoebe Jean make for a packed night at this month’s Deep in the Game party at the Hippo, with DJ residents Cexman, Mark Brown, and the Schwarz.
SATURDAY: Mass Movement, an indeed massive and free night of tough-guy hardcore (and a bit beyond) big names, inspires many a sketchy circle pit at Sonar with Trapped Under Ice, Next Step Up, Down To Nothing, Rival Mobs, and many more. The Legwarmers do the ‘80s at Rams Head Live. Blues guitar hero Johnny Winter does two nights (with his band, making the proper billing the Johnny Winter Band) at Annapolis Rams Head Tavern. Duo Amaral do omni-classical guitar compositions at An die Musik. Baltimore live band hip-hop standard Soul Cannon performs at the Windup Space with the Water. Charm City Art Space hosts two shows today with an afternoon of hardcore from Poison Planet, In Between, and Ragdoll, and a regular evening hours show from Baltimore pop-punk bands of varying stripes including D’Artagnan, Paul Newman and the Ride Home, Letteropener, Atlas At Last, and Sweat Life. Balti Mare brings its Balkan dance party good times to the Creative Alliance with the Barrage Band. Don’t miss: Baltimore postpunk band-of-yore the Grey March plays another reunion show at the Ottobar with Condor and the Unknown.
SUNDAY: Arbouretum’s Dave Heumann DJs upstairs at the Ottobar. Don’t miss: New York reeds heavy Marty Ehrlich leads an all-star band for the 2012 2nd Sunday Jazz Series opener at the Windup Space, including Dave Ballou, John Dierker, Michael Formanek, Lafayette Gilchrist, and Eric Kennedy.
MONDAY: The Bohemian Coffee Shop hosts its weekly jazz duet, performers as yet unknown.
TUESDAY: D.C. chamber-core band Star FK Radium plays the Sidebar with Adelyn Rose, Adrian Mathenia, and Kalispell. Pop-rock guitar champ Eric Johnson brings his Electric Band to Baltimore Soundstage with Dreamboat Armada. Landis Expandis and DJ Napspace’s weekly Dig breaks/funk party returns to Joe Squared Station North. Scottie B mans the decks at Joe Squared Station North. Don’t miss: Xerxes, a pretty great Louisville hardcore/screamo outfit sounding kinda like Orchid or Pg. 99, plays Charm City Art Space with Code Orange Kids, Tigerscout, and Voyage in Coma.
WEDNESDAY: Boston punk band Burning Streets lays into the Sidebar with Universal Remonster, Trashkanistan, and Ahab’s Revenge. Bootsy Collins brings the funk to Baltimore Soundstage. Baltimore-bred cellist Esme Devra West performs solo at 2640 Space.
IN THE WINGS: Way early-days punk/metal crossover band English Dogs comes to the Ottobar Feb. 10 with the Casualties and Toxic Holocaust.
