Country music’s always been good for feuding about what country music is. Local honky-tonk hero Arty Hill just stepped into the middle of a brawl between the great Ray Price and the CMA’s Male Vocalist of the 2012, Blake Shelton, with a fiery blog post on No Depression. You probably know by now that Strum und Twang would never send you out into the wilds of Northern Virginia unless it was for a real good cause—something akin to Wayne “The Train” Hancock (pictured) playing at the Birchmere with Bill Kirchen (the tele-god of Commander Cody fame). Wayne made a great new album, Ride, with pedal steel master/producer extraodinaire/Dixie Chick dad Lloyd Maines, so just this once, it might be worth braving them wretched roads down South. Check ’em out Feb. 22.
The Pre-Party for the Charm City Folk and Bluegrass Festival is coming our way on March 8, with Letitia Van Sant (an S&T favorite), Pretty Gritty, and a whole lot more at the 8x10. April 27 marks the actual, non-pre-party festival, which boasts an impressive lineup of big shots like Tony Trishka and Tim O’Brien as well as locals like Caleb Stine. And speaking of ole Caleb, we hear he’s just finished writing a new batch of songs and is gonna start recording a new album later this month.
The Drive-By Truckers bring their brand of Southern rock to Rams Head Live with the old school alt-country originals with the Old 97’s on March 17. Hell, it’ll feel just like 1997 again.
