What’s up with country

Washington D.C.’s Thorn Apples host their second annual Holiday Hootennany with Highland Hill Boys and Letitia Van Sant (pictured), who had our No. 2 local country record, at the Windup Space Dec. 22. SUT kinda hopes to hear Van Sant sing Dolly Parton’s “Hard Candy Christmas.” And rumor is she’s teaming up with Jess Eliot Myrhe of the Bumper Jacksons for an all-female old-timey band, so keep your ears out for that.

The gravelly-voiced local Red Sammy will play a Holiday Regifting and Rock ’n’ Roll show at Mum’s on Dec. 28. The Red Sammy crew is also putting the wraps on These Poems with Kerosene, a collaboration with University of Baltimore professor and poet Steve Matanl.

Arty Hill will be playing Roots Rock Review on Jan. 19 with his original guitar player and general master-blaster Dave Chappell back on the Tele. It’s in Arlington, but it might be worth braving the wilds of Virginia to see these cats jam together again.

Also in the vile state of Virginia, Iris Dement (No. 3 on our top ten country and folk albums) will be singing her beautiful new tunes at the Birchmere on Jan. 21.

And finally, a show we can’t not mention—but one in which we must offer lots of disclaimers—on Jan. 26 at the Metro Gallery the Country Devils will host a show featuring Bobby E. Lee and the Sympathizers, City Paper sports columnist Jim Meyer, and yours truly with the Barnyard Sharks (Disclaimer: I am very close to myself).
