Rock Since the Bee Gees

On Dec. 20 Friends Records will put out a limited 7-inch. The A-side features Oxes with Will Oldham and Shellac’s Bob Weston covering Sheryl Crow’s ’90s heartland-rock hit, “Strong Enough.” The B-side is Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m On Fire” performed by Microkingdom and Future Islands crooner Samuel T. Herring. The label also laid fans’ worries to rest by announcing on Twitter that their year-end compilation “should arrive in time to be tucked under your trees.”

For more indie-rock stocking-stuffer ideas, check out Dungeonesse’s debut single, out on Secretly Canadian, “Drive You Crazy” backed with “Private Party.” The duo, Wye Oak’s Jenn Wasner and White Life’s Jon Ehrens, make skittering dance pop with diva-worthy vocals on top.

On Dec. 15 the Windup Space will host New York City’s SoftSpot, a post-rock group with a penchant for big, emotional melodies—think Kate Bush leading Explosions in the Sky. Secret Mountains supports, along with folk-rock locals Other Colors and the whimsical Dope Body side project Holy Ghost Party.

Celebration brings its psychedelic cabaret to the Metro Gallery on Dec. 8 with sitarist Ami Dang and the percussion ensemble Drums of Death.

Thurston Moore and John Moloney will make quite a racket on guitar and drums, respectively, at the Ottobar on Dec. 13. They bring along the Massachusetts indie rockers Speedy Ortiz, who plan on touring with our very own Roomrunner in January. Dope Body will also play.

Deep psych group Prince Rama comprises two sisters from Brooklyn via Boston (for art school) via Florida (where they grew up in a Hare Krishna community). Their latest album, Top Ten Hits of the End of the World, finds the band imagining what pop music would sound like during the apocalypse. With 10 tracks from 10 fake bands, the music ranges from space disco to drum-circle psych rock. See them live at the Windup Space Dec. 19 with spaced-out R&B outfit Chiffon.
