What’s up with dance music
Published: July 17, 2013
On Sunday, Aug. 11, Robert Kelly is presenting Mixfest 2013, an event at the Paparazzi nightclub (formerly known as Sonar) which will run from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., touted as “the biggest day party event in Baltimore party history,” which may actually be true if we’re talking just Baltimore disc jockeys. The lineup of 30 DJs includes legends of Baltimore Club music, hip-hop, and house like K.W. Griff, Rod Lee, Sean Marshall, Pork Chop, Mike Crosby, Kenny K, Reggie Reg, Konan, and Rodd Madd Flava.
Matic808 has emerged as one of Baltimore Club’s most exciting producers of late, in part due to some pretty attention-grabbing projects. In late May, the same day a train derailment in Rosedale, Md., caused a large explosion, the producer’s YouTube channel uploaded “Baltimore Train Explosion,” an entertaining Club remix of some amateur video footage of the bla Baltimore st, complete with loops of onlookers exclaiming “damn!” More recently, Matic808 released Yeezus: Baltimore Club Edition, which reimagines every track from Kanye West’s divisive new album. The project, which was recently praised in a Washington Post blog post by critic Chris Richards, retains the record’s dark, aggressive atmosphere while making it a hell of a lot more danceable. Check the remixes out on soundcloud.com/matic808.
A look at some dance nights and DJ events coming up in Baltimore over the next few weeks: Steez Promo continues bringing lots of events to Baltimore Soundstage, including Vibrate with headliner Kill the Noise (pictured) on July 19, and One More Time: A Tribute to Daft Punk on Aug. 21. This week, Red Maple has DJ Gustavo’s Latin Social on July 17 and Deeper Roots with DJ Quincy and DJ Cian on July 18. St. Mary’s Restaurant and Carry-Out has Bacchanal Saturdays on July 20, with WEAA’s Neil Mattei and top DJs spinning soca, reggae, and more. And DIG with Landis Expandis and DJ Napspace continues, as always, to bring the funk to Joe Squared every Tuesday night, with the exception of Aug. 27, when the building will be closed for renovations.
