What’s up with avant-garde and experimental

Curse’s (pictured) self-released four-song EP is a mighty teaser for the full-length release this local duo has slated for the fall. The heavy combination of drummer/electronics Logan Terkelsen (of surf-fuzzed outfit Pfisters and Ich Auch with Karl Ekdahl) and vox/electronics Jane Vincent (ex-Abiku) takes the slowly horrifying and strangely alluring approach to ambient metal, Khanate by way of Brian Eno. Terkelsen and Vincent aren’t afraid of the ornamental electronic texture or lovely melody in the maelstrom, and it’s as refreshingly bonsai an approach to doom as North Texas’ equally heavy and gorgeous Pinkish Black, whose self-titled May release (on Handmade Birds) is worth seeking out.

Ehse Records has a certifiable buzz band on it hands in Horse Lords, whose debut comes out in September. But don’t sleep on Leo Svirsky’s Songs in the Key of Survival, also due that month on Ehse. Svirsky, a piano improviser as adept at caressing a gorgeous melody as he is at hot-wiring composer Gyorgy Ligeti’s keyboard bursts, is a participant in the wonderfully impish Acid Police Noise Ensemble collective in the Hague, whose Artaud-qua-Aktionist activities blend radical thought and music with a healthy dose of serious unseriousness. Songs comes from a similarly blithe impulse, a collection of piano improvs and torch-y song poems that speak class-struggle truth to 1 percent power. A video for “Profound Boredom and Rage,” directed by Romanian video artist Ana Smaragda Lemnaru, debuts this week online. A release performance is slated for August. Visit ehserecords.com for more details.

Speaking of Horse Lords, its percussionist/reedsman Andrew Bernstein performs his solo computer music at the Red Room at Normal’s Books and Records on July 25 in a heady triple bill that also features Brooklyn’s Grasshopper, the trumpet/electronics duo of out-jazz acute psychosis, and the debut of Husbands—a local duo of jack-of-all-instruments Tom Borax and sly video jester Jimmy Joe Roche—a genuine audio/visual crossing of streams. Visit redroom.org for more details.
