Booed Music

Since 2009, the Out of Your Head music collective has put improvisers on the Windup Space stage weekly, just to see what happens. Earlier this year, co-founder Adam Hopkins started up a Brooklyn OOYH outpost at Freddy’s in Park Slope, bolstering an already solid New York-Baltimore conduit that local out musicians have forged for at least the past three decades. Guitarist/OOYH co-founder Matt Frazão holds down the local OOYH fort—a quartet of guitarist Jon Lipscomb, reeds player Matt Rynes, bassist Zack Branch, microphone operator Nick Horner, and drummer Jason Cohen, July 24; a quintet of trumpeter Ben Frock, guitarist Dan Ryan, bassist Joe Bussey, drummer Will Redman, and Erik Spangler on electronics, July 31—while keeping busy himself. He and Soul Cannon recently finished recording with Oxes’ Chris Freeland, and he also plays in powerhouse saxophonist Chris Pumphrey’s sextet, Brazilian chorôs trio Snail Knights, and a new trio called Free Face, who may be touring in August.

Speaking of out, the Red Room Collective puts on its annual Artscape continuous head trip July 20-22, wherein collective members and invited wild-hair kindred spirits levitate the Pentagon, and/or otherwise short-circuit the imagination during the annual food court and heatstroke celebration. Finally, we’d like to welcome home Nautical Almanac, who spent June travelling from Richmond to Phoenix to San Francisco and back. In San Francisco, the duo played with Bill Orcutt, the former Harry Pussy noise architect-turned-acoustic guitar tongue speaker who, in the past few years, has steadily uncorked an intoxicating stream of releases. Bernard Lyons’ Creative Differences series brings him to the Windup Space Sept. 5 with drummer Cris Corsano. Be there or square.
