CHARLIE CHAPLIN SERIES The Charles Revival Series presents a trio of classic half-hour Chaplin films: “A Dog’s Life,” “Shoulder Arms,” and “Sunnyside.” http://www.thecharles.com/www.thecharles.com
JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND Dwayne Johnson toplines this kiddie-action film, a quasi-sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth. Opens Feb. 10.
SAFE HOUSE Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds team up for this spy thriller; an estimable secondary cast (Vera Farmiga, Brendan Gleeson, Sam Shepard, and more) comes along for the ride. Opens Feb. 10.
STAR WARS: EPISODE 1—THE PHANTOM MENACE George Lucas retools and rereleases his much mucked-with cash-cow franchise in 3D, starting with one of the ones no one really wants to see again in any D. And you know what this means, right? Jar Jar Binks practically in your lap. Opens Feb. 10.
THIS MEANS WAR Oh, Tom Hardy, you were doing so well, and then you had to go and get yourself in a silly-looking romcom about two spies (Star Trek’s Chris Pine is the other) battling over the affections of Reese Witherspoon’s character. Opens Feb. 14.
THE VOW Rachel McAdams returns for whatever tears she didn’t wring out of you with The Notebook in this romantic drama about a husband (Channing Tatum, who is no Ryan Gosling) winning back his memory-loss-suffering wife (McAdams). Opens Feb. 10.
THE WAGES OF FEAR Henri-Georges Clouzot’s 1953 existential thriller manages to be as white-knuckle thrilling as it is existential, as desperate men truck unstable nitroglycerine over South American peaks on treacherous roads. At the Charles Theatre Feb. 9 at 9 p.m.
