Paul

Directed by Greg Mottola

This comedy movie is “Rated R for language including sexual references, and some drug use,” but it’s a gentle and funny “R” in the hands of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, the English guys from Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead and England, and they wrote the movie and play some nerds (from England) who visit America and holiest of holys, the gigantor geektacular Comic-Con in San Diego. And then they rent a Winnebago and drive to all the Alien Conspiracy touchstones like Area 51 and stuff, and they meet Paul, who is Seth Rogen, and he blows their minds because he is from Another Planet, and he’s in Big Trouble, but meanwhile he’s in full Seth Rogen mode, and this is a fun movie for geeks because of all the references to a billion other movies like E.T. and Men in Black and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and if you don’t get ’em all, the references, then you are not really as nerdular as you thought—but still probably pretty nerdy. But you don’t have to be a nerd to enjoy this flick, and it probably won’t turn you into one, so don’t worry, because Jane Lynch and Jeffrey Tambor and Jason Bateman and David Koechner and Bill Hader are in it and they each add their own bit of funny, from chuckle to the acronym for “Laugh Out Loud,” and Kristen Wiig is in it and she has a filthy, filthy mouth. And if you believe in religion you should probably take a pass.
