The Flying Avocado
Published: November 21, 2012
We went to this small Owings Mills corner cafe expecting a vegetarian restaurant. That is what their Google search description said, after all. However, with only one vegetarian sandwich option and one vegetarian soup and a mostly meaty menu, this sandwicherie is only slightly more vegetarian-friendly than, say, Burger King. It would be more appropriate to call the Flying Avocado a “health-conscious” restaurant. We went into this busy bistro for a weekday lunch and the quickly moving line was to the door; they are apparently very popular with the nearby business park. We ordered the Avo2 (choice of soup, salad or half sandwich, two for $8.95) and chose the roasted vegetable sandwich, which came on fresh ciabatta bread, perfectly crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. The veggies: portabella, zucchini, squash, eggplant, bell peppers, and onions—heavy on the onions—were all well-cooked and seasoned. This is not something you want to order on a date! On the opposite end of the flavor spectrum, the house vegan chili was rather lacking. On the same spice level as canned tomato soup, its only saving grace was its texture and color, both very nice. Lastly, we tried the chicken nachos ($6.95) and weren’t disappointed. Organic black corn chips, pico, chunks of grilled chicken, and the aforementioned bland vegan chili was helped by a tasty sauce made, with a blend of six cheeses. We had no problem devouring this savory dish.
