Milk and Honey Market

816 Cathedral St., (410) 685-6455, milkandhoneybaltimore.com

This is not your usual dingy Mount Vernon sandwich counter. Milk and Honey, open a little less than two weeks in a light and airy storefront in the revamped Medical Arts building, specializes in all that is ostensibly right and natural in the food world: organic vegetables, free-range meats, artisanal ingredients, everything as locally/ethically sourced as possible. A (very large) small bowl of butternut squash soup ($4.50; actual large $5.50)—one of the changing soup of the day options, all of which are vegetarian or vegan—delivered perfect consistency, a beautiful earthy sweetness, and a welcome peppery afterburn; a bowl of quinoa and mushroom soup (same prices) tasted like home-made, with just a touch of cream and rough-cut celery, onion, and carrots, plus plenty of sliced mushrooms and quinoa practically melting in the broth. A turkey panini ($7.50) placed moist, tastes-like-something turkey on a pressed Stone Mill baguette-style roll with mayo, arugula, and juicy red tomatoes. A roast beef on multi-grain ($7.50) featured a modest portion of very tasty roast beef with nice horseradish dressing—totally delicious. M&H sells all manner of scrumptious groovy comestibles (Boylan’s sodas, Gunpowder Bison meats, organic produce), and next time we’ll sit on that comfy couch and hang out awhile over some coffee or ice cream. Welcome to the neighborhood.
