For some reason, every time we come out of the Home Depot, we’re hungry. At most Depots, there’s a shack that sells chips, hot dogs, and prepackaged burgers flavored with the sharp tang of freezer burn. So color us surprised when we caught a whiff of what smelled like real burgers riding the fall breeze from the Parkville Home Depot’s food truck. Upon closer investigation, we found Mike Wilson, owner of Mike’s Hot Dogs, patting Angus patties with his own gloved hands (from $5) and grilling up Berks sausages ($3.50) for two men in paint-splattered Dickies who seemed to be quite happy with their food of choice, served with Polock Johnny’s sauce. At the suggestion of one of the workmen, we ponied up for a burger and a bottle of water. Boy, were we surprised. Our burger, cooked medium-rare, almost burst out of the bun. We ordered ours with crispy bacon and a barbecue sauce that, in the end, seemed to distract from the flavor and juiciness of the burger. Our companion went for the Spanish and Asiago chicken sausage ($5) with water and a cup of Zeke’s coffee, which tasted freshly brewed to us. Mike’s has a pretty extensive menu for a hardware-store food truck. The hungry can also order a homemade pulled pork sandwich ($6), cheesesteak made from real steak ($6), and a New Jersey favorite, Taylor’s pork roll ($6) with cheese and mayo, which we’ll be getting the next time we need studs to nail. Which will be sooner rather than later.
