The bubble-tea craze that has been rippling around the globe from its Asian origins in the 1980s may have dwindled a bit, but Baltimoreans can still get the sweet, iced, fruity, milky tea drink with tapioca balls at Mondawmin Mall. The lady behind the counter of the Jin’s Bubble Tea and Smoothies kiosk there looked a tad bit bored on a recent visit, but perked right up on the first sign of a potential customer. The mango bubble milk tea ($3.91, after tax, for a 20-ounce cup) was overly sweet for my palate, but the purple-hued tapioca balls, suspended just below the layer of ice cubes, were fun to suck through the wide-mouth straw. I’m told that not all bubble teas are created equal, and as a bubble-tea neophyte, I can only surmise that better ones can be had—though maybe not in Mobtown, where Jin’s seems to be the only purveyor.
