Breathing new life into the long-vacant, former Domino’s Pizza takeout-bunker at Remington Avenue and 29th Street, the approximately named Hopkins Pizza serves Bolton Hill, Charles Village, Waverly, Roland Park, Mount Vernon, Hampden, and Remington, and while it’s a no-frills setup, on offer is one important frill not provided by the previous tenant: tables for dining-in. The menu is pretty standard pizza-and-subs fare, so one Monday night we ordered several pizzas for the hard-working City Paper staff. The pies (14-inch large $9.99, additional toppings $1.25) were all a trifle overdone—a pleasant novelty for the constant underdone-pizza consumer—and there were two standouts. A “Hawaiian-style” ham and pineapple entry, was improved dramatically by the addition of green pepper, upon suggestion of CP Cheap-Eater Athena Towery, who knows her way around a pizza. In the “Specialty Pizza” category, the “Hopkins Meat Lover Pizza” (large, $15.89) was also a standout, with all the expected pizza meats, plus the inclusion of extra cheese—standard—making for heavy slices, but with outstanding structural integrity. A cheesesteak (with everything, $5.99/8-inch) and fries ($2.85) were tasty, substantial, and now on our mental list for strategic speed-dining.
