More on Haute Dog Carte--Fabulous Franks in our restaurant guide.

In Baltimore, street food is thus far associated with neighborhoods that are, well, a little more street-y (e.g. Fells Point). That notion must change, thanks to the advent of Mount Washington’s Haute Dog Carte. Not a carte—or even cart—at all, but the garage of the purple-painted Bonjour French Bakery and Cafe on the west side of Falls Road at Lake Avenue, HDC serves up a limited but frequently changing menu of gourmet dogs, plopped down like mortar rounds into condiment-filled open-ended baguette-like rolls. A sweetish Filipino maharlika sausage ($5) served straight up with a slash of Dijon mustard was delish, though a little textural contrast (some kind of crunch, maybe via relish or peppers) would have been welcome. A quarter-pound black Angus beef dog ($4.50) wowed with its scale alone; popped into a bun with Dijon, house-made tomato and onion jam, and bacon and onion marmalade (the latter 50 cents extra), it delivered beefy, smoky flavor and juicy texture, augmented by the bacon spread, with the sweet tomato sauce subtly cutting the Dijon’s bite. Open every day from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and accepting cash only, Haute Dog is a genuine find.
