Ok, so the baked goods here aren’t technically all that cheap. But with pastries this rich, you probably should skip lunch anyway. Hamilton Bakery makes everything from scratch, with organic ingredients, and get this: They mill their own local flour every morning. When we first set eyes on a crusty loaf of black olive bread ($5.25), we could already tell that it would rival any fresh bread to be found in the city, and this proved to be true. The cupcakes ($2.95) were equally revelatory. They’re nothing flashy—the bakery uses all-natural food dyes and dispenses with the teetering towers of cloying icing so often found on cupcakes—but, boy, do they have character. The Hamilton Velvet cupcake ($2.95) was moist, with a subtle coffee-like flavor, and topped with a frosting that was somehow both rich and light, the texture of whipped cream. A fig frangipane tart ($5.95), a delicious biscuit-like cake speckled with chunks of fig, served as a perfect companion to a morning cup of coffee. And a bonbon-sized chocolate cake bite (we were too busy swooning to note the price) was like an artisanal donut hole, and we mean that in a good way. All hail Hamilton Bakery, long may ye prosper.
