Gregg’s Bakery and Grocery Store
Greenmount Avenue and 31st Street, (410) 400-0639
Like a lot of corner stores in Baltimore, the newish spot at the corner of Greenmount and 31st boasts a counter-spanning shield of bulletproof glass and a small assortment of groceries (sodas, snacks, cereal, Rice-a-Roni). But it also boasts friendly proprietor Gregory Dean and a lit-up bakery case full of doughnuts and pastries. (Gregg’s also offers a sandwich menu and made-to-order bakery items.) We grabbed a dozen assorted doughnuts (regularly $9.58, though we caught the weekend special for $7.50) and hauled them back to the office. It took a bit of hauling. Made at Dean’s bakery kitchen up the street, these ’nuts are whoppers, as close in size and density to bagels as to Krispy Kremes. Though on the firm side, the doughnuts were far from leaden and boasted plenty of fresh flavor. The drizzled vanilla and chocolate frosting on one struck its consumer as a little too sweet; another thought a crème-filled could have used a bit more crème for its size. The co-worker who bit into a filled ’nut, however, was pleasantly surprised to find what appeared to be chunks of fresh apple in the fruit filling, and everybody finished theirs. Maybe not a foodie find, then, but damn good, cheap, and, oh yes, filling.
