Sizzlin’ Summer: Summer in Baltimore is a sensory explosion, from the scent of Old Bay-smothered steamed crabs and the taste of marshmallow-topped chocolate snoballs to the smell of Ocean City salt water mixed with sunscreen and the vision of fireflies. 5/15/2013

First things first: Arbutus isn’t as far as you think. Actually, on the west side, it’s arguably an easier drive than Highlandtown, a comparison that matters a great deal if you’re on the hunt for good tacos. Hell, even from the east side, a trip to Fresh Tex Mex might be worth it. And if the name conjures something more akin to California Tortilla Kitchen, fear not—this is most assuredly your real-ass hole-in-the-wall, made-fresh-in-front-of-you spot, complete with little kids running around. Fried yuca ($2.75) munched on the drive back to the office was perfect, the firm potato-y root sprinkled with a bit of pico de gallo and seasoned well enough that we weren’t looking for condiments. Of our tacos, the egg taco ($1.95) was the surprising winner, with the eggs chewy in a good well-done-subbing-for-meat way and better than expected. A grilled chicken taco ($2) founds bits of chicken still moist and flavorful, while a tilapia taco ($2.85) was rather more is-what-it-is. Note that Tuesday will get you beef tacos for a buck apiece, for the truly cheap.
